LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY. The Aviation Museum of Kentucky (AMK), Blue Grass Airport, Lexington, continues its long tradition of NASA-supported Saturday STEM programs. These programs are a STEM-based full-day instructional program at the Aviation Museum of Kentucky for middle school students (6,7, & 8th grades). Also included are middle school teachers. Students and teachers participate in sessions during the day with a focus on a variety of aerospace topics that include the Bernoulli effect, technology of aerospace, aeronautical navigation, instrumentation, aerospace design problems, earth orbit, flight simulation, International Space Station, and NASA space challenges.
These topics and activities expose the students to see the application of science, technology, engineering, and math are used within the broad aerospace field. Various resources, including many of the museum’s exhibits, are used to enhance student interest and understanding of the topics.
The most recent program, with students from Lexington’s Winburn Middle School, were treated to a tour of a visiting USAF C-17 Globemaster III from the 437th/315th Airlift Wing, Joint Base Charleston, that had stopped into Lexington during a training mission.
