The Aviation Museum of Kentucky, preserving the Commonwealth’s aviation and aerospace accomplishments since 1995 at Blue Grass Airport, is the 2022 winner as The Best of Lexington – Museum category.
This annual ranking is conducted through the Lexington HERALD-LEADER. Winners are determined by votes from readers and the public, following nominations to the newspaper. Categories range across activities and attractions that contribute to the quality of life in Lexington and central Kentucky.
The Aviation Museum of Kentucky provides visitors an opportunity to encounter aviation and aerospace with an emphasis upon aerial achievements from the Commonwealth. Two large hangars include military aircraft, general aviation and space exhibits. Among items specific to Kentucky are the Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame, begun in 1996, and a full-scale replica of the first aircraft designed, built and flown in the Commonwealth. A flight simulator suite offers visitors a chance to fly planes and helicopters without leaving the building. A unique on-the-ramp observation area puts visitors on the tarmac to watch airport operations from arrivals to take-offs.
Aviation Summer Camps, middle school STEM sessions, guest lectures and visits by historic aircraft are outreach programs conducted by the aviation museum. Scheduled for September 20 is a visit by one of only two flying World War Two-era Boeing B-29s. October 7, 8 and 9 will bring a stop by a Ford Tri-Motor, one of the planes that started the airline industry in our nation.
The Aviation Museum of Kentucky is located at 4029 Airport Road adjacent to Blue Grass Airport in Lexington. It is the official aviation museum of the Commonwealth as well as home to the Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame and operates as a non-profit corporation.
