Sellers Quadraplane
Matthew Sellers did independent, original aviation research in Carter County, Ky. This exhibit is a replica of the aircraft he built near Grahn and flew in 1908 - just five years after the Wright Brothers' flight. Seller's plane was the first airplane designed, built and flown in Kentucky. This plane was also the first aircraft with retractable wheels. It had no brakes but landed on skids to shorten its stopping distance. Below the Quadraplane is equipment from Seller's actual workshop, showing the tools he used to build this plane. The wooden planks you see were part of the workshop he used. His house was deÂstroyed in a disastrous fire.
