CF680 Turbofan Engine

Unlike conventional turbo jet engines, turbofan engines compress much more air than is needed for the engine's combustor section. This excess air is diverted along the side of the engine, providing cooling, sound suppression, and additional thrust. Compared to conventional jet engines, turbofans are quieter and more efficient than conventional jet engines, with lower carbon monoxide, unburned fuel, and nitrogen oxide emissions.

The CF6 family of turbofan jet engines is used to power many of today's largest jet airlines, including the Boeing 747.Thrust is 52,500 &ndash 63,500 pounds.
This CF680 is one used on the Boeing 747 airliner. This particular engine was used as a sales aid and has traveled worldwide. It was donated to the Museum by the General Electric Corporation through the efforts of Lt. Col. Carl Woodruff.

Children may want their picture taken on the platform in front of this huge engine.
