
McDonnell Douglas F4S Phantom II

The prototype of this aircraft was produced in 1958. It entered Naval service in 1966. The F-4 has set some 16-world speed, climb and altitude records. It was initially called the F-110 by the Air Force but redesignated as the F-4 in 1962. The US produced 5,057 of these aircraft and Mitsubishi built 135 in Japan. Seventeen major versions have been produced and have been used by the US Navy, Air force, and Marines. The aircraft was retired in 1996. This airplane came from the Marine Corps in Maryland and was retired at Andrews AFB in 1997.
MCDONNELL DOUGLAS F4S PHANTOM IIThe honorary pilot’s name on the aircraft is Ernie Fletcher, governor of the state of Kentucky. He served in the USAF as an F-4E Aircraft Commander and NORAD Alert Force Commander where he led flights that intercepted Soviet military aircraft during the Cold War.
