AMK accepts volunteer applications year-round from individuals of all ages with all levels of experience, from students to retired pilots!

The availability of volunteer hours depends upon the ongoing or seasonal needs of the museum’s departments. Browse our exciting positions, and apply for one or as many as you’d like! 

Tour Guide
Tour guides are storytellers who help us to create and maintain important connections with the visitors who travel from around the world to explore our facilities. Tour guides get the unique opportunity to witness first-time and returning visitors travel through aviation’s history by offering informative presentations that draw connections between past and present. 

  • When: Year-round during regular business hours and special event weekends.
  • Ideal for: Individuals who have a background or strong interest in science or aviation history, enjoy teaching, and have excellent communication skills with visitors of all ages and backgrounds. 

Behind-the-Scenes Support
Be part of the inner cogs that keep our machine roaring year-round by supporting the critical work of our administrative staff, from facilities and grounds maintenance to administrative roles such as answering phones, filing, mailing preparations, and data entry. 

  • When: Year-round during regular business hours, some evenings, and special event weekends.
  • Ideal for: Those seeking consistent or occasional weekday opportunities, who possess or want to improve their administrative skills and are available on an as-needed basis.
  • Things to Note: No prior experience is required.

Program Facilitator
Throughout the year, we have interactive programs for the whole family to enjoy. Work alongside our staff to interact with families and facilitate program delivery, i.e. gather and prepare supplies, help with set-up and clean-up, assist in facilitating hands-on experiences, etc.

  • When: Year-round during regular business hours and special event weekends.
  • Ideal for: Fun, outgoing volunteers who like variety, enjoy working with children, and are looking for a consistent volunteer role.
  • Things to Note: Successful applicants for this role must be able to volunteer at least once per month.

Aircraft & Ground Vehicle Maintenance Crew Member
It takes a lot of work to keep the museum’s collection and equipment in top operating condition. From fabricating and wiring to painting and polishing, our dedicated maintenance volunteers work behind the scenes in our workshops to restore, rebuild and refurbish collection vehicles that help the museum achieve its mission. 

  • When: Year-round opportunities during regular business hours and evenings, with a critical need from May to September during special event weekends. 
  • Ideal for: Passionate enthusiasts who want to assist with regular care and cleaning of aircraft to keep them look good for our guests

Special Event Crew
Make a difference at AMK by helping with set-up, clean-up, registration, ticketing, programming, and more at member events, exhibit openings, and outreach events.

  • When: Some year-round opportunities
  • Ideal for: Outgoing, flexible people seeking seasonal or occasional opportunities on weekends, who are willing to assist in all capacities and enjoy meeting new people.
  • Things to Note: No prior experience is required! 

Visitor Experience Representative
These volunteers represent the face of the museum and are often one of the first points of contact visitors have upon entering the museum during special events. As major support for front-of-house staff, these individuals perform a variety of functions, including coverage for the admission desk and museum store, as well as offering assistance and recommendations to visitors, members, and groups, including a variety of questions unrelated to the museum, such as the area’s many attractions, restaurants, and accommodations.

  • When: Some year-round opportunities during regular business hours, with a critical need on weekdays and during special events. 
  • Ideal for: Individuals who possess clear, friendly, and welcoming communication skills and are seeking consistent or occasional opportunities.
  • Things to Note: Prior experience is not required, but individuals must acquire a thorough knowledge of museum services, exhibitions, and admissions functions prior to working independently.

Research Assistants
These volunteers typically work alone, performing research and scholarly duties. Volunteers in this department assist staff in the research of aviation history, cataloging, processing, and filing of the museum’s sizable collection of technical manuals, historical documents, photographs, reference books, and other publications.

  • When: Year-round.
  • Ideal for: Individuals who are seeking consistent weekday opportunities, who possess or want to improve their archival skills, and who are inquisitive by nature and thrive in situations requiring diligent detective work.
  • Things to Note: Prior experience is not required, but individuals with demonstrated skills in historical preservation and archival handling is preferred.

Outreach Ambassadors / Speakers Bureau
Our outreach program promotes engagement in the aviation and aerospace industry and emphasizes the significant impact that early transportation innovations have on our lives today. Be part of the museum’s brand by supporting our efforts to connect with statewide communities at various partnership events throughout the year. Our volunteer ambassadors travel within their regions of interest to support the museum’s presence at approved outreach events by assisting with promoting the museum and its programs. 

  • When: Year-round opportunities on an on-call basis, as-needed basis.
  • Ideal for: Outgoing, flexible individuals who are seeking seasonal or occasional opportunities and enjoy meeting new people.
  • Things to Note: Prior experience is not required. Dress requirements can vary depending on the nature of the event or project in which the volunteer is participating.
